Singler Files #1

by Sarah on July 8, 2013

light bulbs - Singler FilesMy friend Julia sent me a link last week and said it was “for the singler files.” After squeeing with delight at the phrase “singler files,” I decided I should use it to create a series of posts containing links and content that singlers might find useful.

This will probably become a bi-weekly thing, so if you find any relevant articles, send them my way. And of course, I’d love to hear your reactions to the things I’m going to share. You can always leave a comment below.

#1 – Talking About Dating

Captain Awkward responded to a reader this week on the subject of how to let people know that one isn’t interested in dating. In this case, the asker isn’t interested in sex or any kind of dating, and while not representative of all singlers, the response is well worth reading. She also mentions the, “You’ll change your mind one day,” argument, which I’ll be talking about in more depth soon.

#2 – Sex Nerds At Dawn!

First of all, I’m newly obsessed with the Sex Nerd Sandra podcast, so when I saw that she had done an episode a few years ago with Dr. Christopher Ryan, the author of Sex at Dawn, I was beyond thrilled. I can’t remember how I first came across the book – at the time, I hadn’t even heard the word “poly” – but I felt incredibly validated to find someone in the world arguing that monogamy might not be the natural way of things. If you haven’t read the book, I’d highly recommend reading it, as well as listening to the podcast episode.

My favorite part of the podcast was definitely the part when Dr. Ryan says that he sees a positive correlation between high IQ and alternative sexualities/relationship patterns. Go smart people!

#3 – Singlism

Singlism is Bella DePaulo’s new book. I just bought this on Amazon and can’t wait to dig in. Her first book, Singled Out, blew me away, and I’d love to be able to talk more about how singles are discriminated against in modern society. If you can’t wait for me to finish it and share the details, I’d highly recommend picking up the book yourself.

That’s it for the Singler Files today folks! Let me know what you found useful and what you would like to see next time by leaving a comment below!
