Talking to Fear: A Teleclass on How To Do the Hard Things

Change is scary. Leaps are scary. Big decisions can be downright terrifying.

At the same time, if you want to live the life that you are secretly dreaming of, you know you need to learn how to do the scary things.

But all the “suck-it-up-take-the-leap-just-do-it” advice out there just doesn’t ring true for you. If anything, it makes you feel even more paralyzed.

The good news is that there really are better ways to handle fear.

You don’t have to leap and hope that a net appears. You can work through fear in a calm and rational way.

Walking on a dream

You can even become friends with fear.

(In a holding-hands-and-skipping-down-the-yellow-brick-road kind of way.)

You have all the courage in you that you need to live the life you want.

I can see it in you.

The fact that you can even envision something different for yourself means you have the capacity to make it happen.

I also see the fear. And the shame. And the self-doubt.

I see the little nagging voices that keep you up at night, telling you that you are not the person to do this thing.

I see them because I have them too.

People tell me all the time that I’m courageous. And it boggles my mind most of the time because I don’t feel courageous.

And yet, I repeatedly do things that other people think are courageous.

  • After college, I pursued my dream of working in theatre, while traveling all over the place to do it.
  • Last year, I quit my full-time job and traveled around the country for six months by myself.
  • This month, I’m posting videos every day about deeply personal opinions and experiences. On the internet.
  • Last week, I decided I wanted to start dating more, and three days later I went on my first one.

For each one of these things, someone has told me that I’m brave and that it takes courage.

And yet, I never did any of them because I felt particularly courageous.

For the most part, I felt terrified.

In fact, I’ll tell you a secret…

I always feel scared when I’m doing something important.

The only difference between me and anyone else is that I know how to talk to my fear and transform it.

It doesn’t take crazy courage genes. It just takes practice.

I see how those little voices are stopping you right now from doing the thing that you want to be doing. From bringing your dream into reality.

And I know they lie.

You are the perfect person to do the thing you want to do. Unlike the little voices, the desires in your heart don’t lie.

Like with any other emotion, we don’t have to be impressed by our own fears.

Oh sure, there are thousands of years of biological conditioning which turn us into quivering piles of hormones when our fear response gets activated…

But we can work around that.

Fear and courage are really just two sides of the same coin. You just need the right lens to see the connection.

And once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty fun.

(I particularly enjoy watching people’s mouths drop open when I tell them about the next crazy thing I’m doing.)

So I made this class for you.

It’s a class on talking to fear, but really it’s a class to help you do the next thing that will bring you closer to your dream.

It reflects the curiosity, courage, bravery, vulnerability, beauty, and straight-up badassery that I see in you.

And when you use the tools this class has to offer, other people will be able to see them too.

Uh, excuse me, ma’am. Your courage is showing.

“[Sarah is] definitely one of the most fearless people I know. I’ve only really ever taken one big leap… in that time [she has] taken at least 3. Fear is a powerful emotion to work with, but I know we’re in good hands!”

Here are some of the things we’ll cover during the class, with plenty of time for Q&A at the end:

  • How to find out what your fear’s “mission” is
  • How to create safety plans that make you feel comfortable while still doing the “scary” thing you really want to do
  • How to break scary things down into baby steps so you can practice working through fear on small tasks first
  • And much more….

By the end of the class, you’ll have a new perspective on fear, and you’ll have some solid tactics for helping you move towards the next big thing you’re dreaming of doing.

You’ll also understand why I’m definitely not some crazy freak of nature who was born with extra courage genes…
